Monday November 26th, 2012 -  The atmosphere at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is chaotic and anticipatory: caterers are putting the final touches on  their hors d'oeuvres; drinks are poured; fashion models are getting into the latest creations of some of Quebec's finest designers. Guests--dressed to the nines-- first trickle and then pour into the Museum's large glass room. This evening, merchants and designers from the Quartier du Musée area will present their products and creations to an exclusive audience.

I have been following Nycol Beaulieu’s work for almost twenty years. Nycol Beaulieu is an artist that observes. She looks at a lake, a hill, a structure lost in an immensity and paints it in the truest fashion possible.

The result of this precise work, anchored in unmodified reality, takes my spirit to a dreamlike place.

The percolating sounds of African rumba fill the hall. In front of the stage the crowd shimmies, a rapturous smile on everyone. That was October 15th 2012 at the Rialto. The band was Staff Benda Bilili, straight from Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
